LESSON – 5

ADAPTATION IN PLANTS

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.

1.      What are the two broad groups of the plants?

Based on their habitats, plants can be broadly divided into two groups- terrestrial plants and aquatic plants.

2.      What are deciduous plants? Gibe two examples.

Some trees in the plains have less rainfall. They shed their leaves in winters to conserve water. The trees that shed all their leaves in autumn and bear new leaves in spring are called deciduous trees. For examples, cherry, oak sheesham and teak.

3.      What special feature helps the plants in the hilly areas to survive?

It is very cold in the hilly areas. So the plants that grow here are adapted to survive in the cold climate and heavy snowfall. These trees are straight, cone-shaped with sloping branches. This helps the snow that falls on them to slide off easily. The leaves are needle-like and the stem is woody and brown.

4.      Which trees are well adapted to grow on the marshes? What helps them to survive?

In marshy areas, the soil is very sticky and clayey. This prevents the air to reach the roots of plants. Mangrove trees are well adapted to grow here. Since roots need to breathe air, mangroves have special aerial roots that grow above the water. These roots have special parts for breathing.

5.      What feature helps the floating plants to float? Give two examples of the floating plant.

Plants that float freely on the surface of water are called floating plants. These plants are very light. They have spongy stems that help them to float on water. They do not have fixed roots. Example duckweed and water hyacinth.

6.      How do saprophytic plants make their food?

Some plants cannot make their food through photosynthesis as they lack chlorophyll. So they absorb food from dead plants, animals and stale food. These plants are called saprophytic plants. Mushroom and would are examples of such plants.
