LESSON 2
THE AGES : STONE AND IRON
1. Which
men belonged to the Palaeolithic age?
The Java men, the Peking men, the Heidelberg men,
the Neanderthal men and the Cro-Magnon men all belonged to the Palaeolithic
Age.
2. Comment on the clothing of the Palaeolithic
humans.
Palaeolithic humans used leaves, barks of trees
and animals’ skin to protect themselves and from harsh climatic
conditions. The Neanderthal and the Cro-Magnon
men used animal skin as their clothes and even sewed them using bone needles.
3. How did the Mesolithic age change
the food habits of the people?
The positive changes in the climate improved the
life of plants, animals and humans. Grass, weed and plants started to grow. The
earth became green in this age. New kinds of plants like wheat, barley, rice,
etc. were seen in this age. Plant-eating animals grew in number. Moreover,
humans also started eating the seeds of the plants as food. Slowly, they also
learnt to grow them as crops.
4. Comment on the invention of wheel.
Early men might have noticed the rolling quality
of the logs of wood while cutting trees. They might have then started using
them for rolling the hunted animals down the slopes. Then they might have made
a rough wheel and attached an axle at its centre rigidly to make the wheel turn
freely on the axle.
5.How did the Neolithic men benefit
themselves from animals?
People of this age used dogs for hunting and
guarding. Ox and ass were used to plough the fields and carry loads. Cattle and
goats were kept for milk. Sheep were domesticated for wool and meat. People who
kept goats, sheep and cow were known as shepherds.
