PLANTS- PARTS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
1. What
are the two main parts of a plant?
A plant is divided into two main parts-
the shoot and the root. The part of the plant which is above the soil is called
the shoot. The part of the plant which remains under the soil is called the
root.
2. What
are the main functions of a root?
a. Roots
fix plants firmly in the soil.
b. They
help the plants to stand straight
c. They
hold the soil and prevent it from being washed away by water or wind.
d. They
take in water and minerals from the soil and pass them, to the stem.
e. Some
roots store food.
3. What
are the main functions of leaves? Why are they called the kitchen of the plant?
Leaves prepare and store food for the plant, gives out the oxygen during the process of photosynthesis. The process by which leaves make food in the presence of carbon dioxide, water and sunlight is called photosynthesis. Therefore, they are known as the kitchen of the plant.
4. Explain
the structure of a seed with the help of a well-labelled diagram.
The hard outer cover of the seed is
called the seed coat. It protects the seed. There is an embryo that grows into
a baby plant. The inner part of the seed that provides food to the baby
5. What
are edible and non-edible seeds?
We eat seeds of some plants. They are called
edible seeds. And the seeds which are not to be eaten they are called
non-edible seeds.
6. What
is germination? Describe the process of germination.
The
process by which a seed starts growing into a new plant is called germination.
When a seed is sown into the moist soil, it takes in water from the soil. Then
a shoot grows upwards towards light. Soon a seedling with tiny leaves comes out
of the ground and it grows into a new plant. Seeds need water, air and warmth
to germinate.
7. Write
some ways by which we can take proper care of the plants.
a. We
should water the plants daily
b. We
should add manure to the soil
c. Keep
removing unwanted plants called weeds.
d. Sufficient
space should be left between two consecutive plants
