1.  What are insects? Name some common insects found in our surroundings.

Insects are small creatures that are found almost everywhere. They are different in size, colour and features. Some common insects like ants, bees, butterflies, beetles, mosquitoes, flies, honeybees and grasshoppers can be seen in our surroundings.

 

2.  What are the main parts of an insect’s body? Draw a labelled diagram of an insect’s body.


An insect’s body is divided into three main parts – head, thorax and abdomen.

3.  What do you mean by life cycle? Draw a labelled diagram of the life cycle of a butterfly.

Life cycle is the series of changes that happen to a living creature over the course of its lifetime.

 

4.  Name three insects which are useful to us and how?

There are some insects which are very useful to us.

a.  Honeybees give us honey and beeswax. Candles, soaps and crayons and made with beeswax.

b.  Silkworms give us silk.

c.  Beetles feed on dead plants and animals and help to clean up the environment.

 

5.  Name three harmful insects and write how they cause harm to us?

Many insects are harmful to us. They cause harm to plants as well as animals. They can harm us in many ways.

a.  Mosquitoes bite us to suck our blood and spread diseases like malaria and dengue.

b.  Flies, ants and cockroaches carry germs with them and cause diseases.

c.  Silverfish can destroy our clothes.

 

6.  List any three preventive methods to keep insects away.

The following preventive methods can be taken to keep the insects away.

a.  Do not allow standing water to collect in our surroundings.

b.  All drains in kitchen and bathrooms should be kept clean

c.  Dustbins should be kept covered and cleaned regularly.
