ADAPTATION IN ANIMALS

DEFINE THE FOLLOWING TERMS.

1.      Hibernation

Some animals become inactive and going into a kind of deep sleep during the winter season to protect themselves from cold and to conserve energy when sufficient food unavailable. This called hibernation.

2.      Camouflage

Some animals like chameleon and stick insect have ability to blend with the colour of their surroundings to save themselves from their enemies. This is called camouflage.

3.      Migration

Some animals move to another place in large numbers when there is a harsh climate and scarcity of food. The large scale movement of animals to escape extreme climatic conditions and in search of food is called migration.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.

1.      What do you mean by the term “adaptation”?

Any feature that helps an animal to modify itself in some way to survive better in its environment is called adaptation.

2.      What causes an animal species to become extinct?

When living conditions do not remain suitable for an animal species, the whole group dies out and becomes extinct.

4.      Write two adaptive features of animals living in extreme cold region.

Animals living in extremely cold and snowy places like polar bears have thick fur on their body to keep them warm and small ears to prevent loss of body heat. Other polar animals like penguins and seals have a thick layer of fat under their skin called blubber to keep them warm.

5.      What are aquatic animals? Write any three adaptations needed by the aquatic animals.

Animals that live in water are called aquatic animals. For example. Fish, turtle, crab etc. fishes can swim well with the help of their streamlined body. Water birds like ducks have webbed feet which help them to paddle and swim. They have water-proof feathers to protect their bodies.

Turtles have flippers which help them to swim. They have a hard shell which protects them from their enemies.

Following steps can be adopted to protect the animals.

a.      Avoid cutting trees as much as possible.

b.      Animals should not be killed or captured for sports and for their leather or tusks.
