LESSON – 10
SUN AS A RESOURCE
I.
DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN:-
1.
Renewable and non-renewable source of energy
Sources of energy
that can be used again and again are called renewable source of energy. Natural
resources such as coal, petroleum and natural gas form naturally beneath the
earth very slowly. The supplies of all these sources are limited and once consumed
cannot be made easily again. These are called non-renewable sources of energy.
2.
Solar energy and wind energy.
The energy we get
from the sun is called solar energy. We get energy from the sun mainly in the
form of heat and light. Solar energy captured by solar panels, wind energy is
used in windmills to grind gains and generate electricity.
II ANSWER THE
FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:-
1.
Why is sun said to be the main source of energy?
The sun is the major
source of energy on the earth. We get energy from the sun mainly in the form of
heat and light. The energy we get from the sun is called solar energy. All
living things need solar energy to stay alive.
2.
What are the uses of solar energy?
The solar energy is
very useful for us. We have made many devices which work on solar energy. Solar
cooker, solar lamp, solar geysers and solar panel for generating electricity
are some of the uses of solar energy.
3.
Why is the sun important for plants?
The sun is important
for plants because plants cannot grow in the absence of sunlight. They use
sunlight, air and water to make their own food. Sunlight also helps seeds to
grow into saplings.
4.
What is the effect of sun on the seasons?
Sun has effect on
seasons. The earth moves around the sun. Due to this movement, different parts of
the earth receive different amount of sunlight during a particular time of a
year which causes the change in seasons.
5.
What does the conservation of energy mean? List any five ways by
which you can conserve energy.
The way by which we
save energy and prevent its misuse is termed as conservation of energy. We can
save energy for future use by the following ways:
a.
We should switch off bulbs, fans, TV and other gadgets when not
in use.
b.
Use LED bulbs and energy efficient fans instead of ordinary
ones.
c.
Try to use public transport instead of personal one.
d.
Install solar panel for household uses
e.
Devices like geyser, microwave oven, washing machine, etc. be
used only when needed.
f.
We should not leave the door of the refrigerator open.
